NAME Smart-Storage, Smart Grids/Smart Building and Power Electronics Laboratories

DESCRIPTION

This asset groups together the laboratories aimed at the validation of hardware and software products used in electrical networks. It includes the Smart-Storage laboratory aimed at performing storage system characterisation tests (A), the medium voltage power electronics laboratories aimed at performing electrical tests on drives and converters (B1 and B2), and the Smart Grids/Smart Building laboratory aimed at evaluating scenarios such as energy communities, residential/industrial self-consumption and microgrids (C).

FIELDS OF APPLICATION

Integration of distributed generation and storage. Microgrids

Product validation (HW/SW) for electricity grids

MOST OUTSTANDING EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS

  • Medium voltage power electronics laboratories

This laboratory allows electrical testing of low and medium voltage converters (up to 4 kVdc) for the validation of drives and converters that act as an interface between generation, consumption and storage systems and the grid. The laboratory has: 3 motor benches with regenerative drives, 2 test areas with adjustable dc power supplies of up to 150 kW, an IGBT test bench for performing switching tests and loss evaluation and a liquid cooling system with a cooling capacity up to 20 kW

  • Smart Grids/Smart Guilding laboratory

Laboratory aimed at carrying out tests in multiple Smart-Grids / Smart Buildings environments (energy communities, residential/industrial self-consumption, microgrids). The laboratory has a scaled microgrid that emulates the operation of a grid that integrates renewable generation, smart loads and storage systems and can operate in both stand-alone and grid-connected modes. The platform is highly configurable (it can emulate scenarios such as energy communities with consumers, prosumers, local markets, etc.) and allows the experimental validation of energy management strategies implemented on real control hardware that commands energy flows in the microgrid.

  • Storage Laboratory, Smart Storage

Laboratory aimed at performing storage system characterisation tests. The laboratory has cyclers for battery packs, battery modules and cells that allow analysing the impact of different current/power profiles on the degradation and useful life of the batteries to be analysed. The laboratory also has climatic chambers that allow to configurate the temperature of the validation environment of the systems in order to study the effect of these temperature conditions on the performance of the storage systems.

SERVICES OFFERED BY THE ASSET

Characterisation and testing of storage systems

Characterisation tests provide information on the behaviour of storage systems under multiple conditions. This information can be used to perform life estimation and degradation modelling which are key aspects in determining the optimal sizing and operation of storage systems in certain applications.

Proof of Concept

The laboratory stage makes it possible to carry out proof of concept and experimental validation of power electronics solutions associated with generation, storage and consumption systems operating in power grids. This validation is the stage prior to field validation.

Proof of Concept

Laboratory tests allow validation of proofs of concept aimed at the implementation of new business models in Smart Grids where self-consumption scenarios, P2P, shared storage markets, etc. are considered.
