One of the main instruments for the materialisation and concretisation of the generation and extraction of value from the data of infrastructures, built assets, the Smart City and, on a larger scale, smart territories, lies in the generation of a hybrid physical and digital ecosystem through the concept of a digital twin. In the urban and territorial context, a digital twin is a virtual replica of the main elements of the city and its critical infrastructures, connected to databases and sensors. This model of the city and its processes allows to analyse, model, simulate and predict scenarios or elaborate hypotheses to support better decision-making processes in urban planning and in the management of infrastructures and public services, in multiple domains and in an integrated way. Accordingly, the ‘Laboratory for the development of Digital Infrastructure Twins in the built environment and territory’, LAB DIGITAL TWIN, consists of both physical and digital components.
Virtual models developed using BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology. The BIM methodology is based on the collaboration of all agents, so it is necessary to establish standards that allow such collaboration. TECNALIA uses the IFC data model, which serves as a format for data exchange between agents, processes and applications and is defined by the ISO 16739:2018 Standard.
In the case of linear infrastructures, territory models and, also, when the geolocation of assets is necessary, GIS models are the technological solution used to create, manage, analyse and map all types of data. Through GIS models, it is possible to connect the data to a map, integrating the location of the assets with all kinds of descriptive information.
Both types of models, BIM and GIS, provide a foundation for data-driven management and analysis to understand patterns, relationships, and context of the processes and systems implemented in monitored assets to deliver better communication, efficiency, intelligent management, and decision-making.
TECNALIA, in collaboration with Arista, Dell, Nvidia and Red Hat, international leaders in the digitisation of business networks, has created KATEA, pioneering platforms for the digital transformation of companies. These unique digital infrastructures combine a supercomputing centre, a Data Lab and a private cloud to tackle digital projects in any field and in a comprehensive manner.
KUBIK is an experimental, singular and unique facility, created for the development and validation of new concepts, products and services on a real scale.
These are mainly aimed at improving energy efficiency, safety, people's quality of life and new interactivity systems in buildings.
The main uniqueness of KUBIK is its ability to generate realistic scenarios, on which to investigate the improvement of energy efficiency, based on the interaction of construction solutions, the intelligent management of air conditioning and lighting systems and the supply from renewable energies.
The infrastructure consists of a building capable of reconfiguring a maximum of 550 m2, distributed over a basement floor and three other floors above ground. The energy supply is based on a combination of renewable energy (geothermal, solar, wind) and, if necessary, conventional energy.
It is equipped with a monitoring and control system, which processes the information necessary for the development of R&D&I activities. The building is fully demountable and allows the reconfiguration of simultaneous scenarios at a constructive level, by replacing the constructive components of the façade, roof and partitions.
KUBIK adapts to the needs of the experimental process of each implemented development. Within its highly flexible approach, the internal distribution of the space, the envelope and structural systems, the configuration of the HVAC system, the electrical network, the control system and the associated virtual model are redefined for each experiment.
To work on a larger scale, agreements have been made with public entities for access to data from TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURES OF PUBLIC SERVICES:
o Parke, Basque Technology Park.
o Ermua City Council.
o Bizkaia Connected Corridor (BCC).
