"Interferometry" is a measurement method that applies the phenomenon of wave interference (generally, light, radio or sound waves). The measurements can include certain other characteristics of the waves themselves, and the materials they spread through. Additionally, interferometry is used to describe the techniques used by light waves to study changes in displacement. Displacement measurement interferometry is widely used to calibrate and control movement during the mechanical phase of precision machining.
